Eco Warrior Award Winner 2010: Most Sustainable Community Based Tourism Enterprise
Camps International has been awarded the Eco-Warrior Award for the Most Sustainable Community Based Tourism Enterprise in East Africa. The Eco-Warrior Awards were launched by Ecotourism Kenya in 2005 and are assessed against outstanding innovation, real achievements, sustainability and replicability of the initiative.
We achieved highly in all these areas whilst respecting the environment, local people and cultures and linking with communities to positively empower economies and promote self-sufficiency and environmental governance. The awarding body stated that Camps International were the outstanding choice.
Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards: 2008 Best Volunteering Organisation Winner & 2007 Best Volunteering Organisation Highly Commended
We are proud to have been recognised at the World Responsible Tourism awards on several occasions; being longlisted since 2005, receiving Highly commended in 2007 and winning the award in 2008 for the ‘Best volunteering Organisation’. These are the largest and most well respected awards in the travel industry, celebrating the best in responsible tourism and recognising ethical companies that make a significant contribution to responsible travel.
Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge
We are among the first expedition providers (and one of only a handful) to receive the Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) Quality Badge which acts as a national accreditation for the provision of educational visits, recognising organisations that are delivering high quality learning experiences and managing risk effectively.
In order to achieve the badge we have pledged our commitment to engage in an ongoing process to sustain high-quality learning outside the classroom experiences and have demonstrated to an independent assessor that we meet the following 6 quality indicators:
- Have a process in place to assist team members to plan the learning experience effectively
- Provide accurate information about our expeditions
- Provide activities, experience or resources that meet learner needs
- Review the experience and act on feedback
- Meet the needs of team members
- Have safety management processes in place to manage risk effectively

British Safety Standard BS8848
BS8848 is the British Standard specification for the safe provision of visits, fieldwork, expeditions and adventurous activities outside the UK. All our expeditions comply with the standard and are annually reviewed through a self-assessment process.
Any volunteer from the UK who travels with us on any of our four week expeditions can obtain either an ASDAN Universities Award or 70 UCAS points (the equivalent of an A at AS-level) through the CoPE level 3 programme that we run in association with ASDAN, the internationally recognised awarding body.
DofE - Duke of Edinburgh Award
It is possible to incorporate elements of the Award within your expedition. Some of our trekking routes have approval for the Expedition Section and many of our leaders are Accredited Expedition Assessors. Please contact us to find out more.
EPA - Expedition Providers Association
EPA is a membership organisation for the overseas youth expedition sector and is the awarding body for the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge. Since EPA was formed in 2003, it has been working hard to promote best practice for school expeditions and Camps International has been actively involved with EPA throughout this time.
ATOL is a protection scheme for flights and air holidays that is managed by the Civil Aviation Authority and Camps International holds an Air Travel Organiser’s Licence (“ATOL”). If you have booked a package with us that includes a flight, ATOL protects you from losing money or being stranded abroad if the company goes out of business.

Total Payment Protection (TOPP) is an insurance policy that Camps International has arranged to protect monies that you have paid us in relation to your trip. It means that in the event of the company’s failure before you travel, you will be refunded your money. If you are away and the company cannot continue with it’s obligations, arrangements will be made to ensure you can either continue with your trip or you will be refunded for the part of the trip that you are unable to complete. TOPP is only applicable to some of our programmes so please check your invoice documentation for confirmation of cover.
