Batu Puteh

Batu Puteh

OVERVIEW

Batu Puteh is a community run initiative combining eco-tourism with the protection and re-establishment of endangered forest and riverside environments, namely the Supu Forestry Reserve and Kinabatangan River. These areas are some of the most diverse in the world and are home to a number of the most rare animals on the planet including the Proboscis Monkey, Pygmy Elephants and the famous Bornean Orangutans.

With the help of our volunteers, we have planted thousands of trees, taken part in countless wildlife surveys, helped cut trails and paths for the rangers and wildlife and erected fences around the reserve to separate it from the encroaching oil palm plantations. All our volunteers spend time living in the rainforest reserve itself sleeping in a Basha (hammock and Tarpaulin combination) and taking part in evening river cruises to see the wildlife come out as it gets cooler (including the crocodiles), wildlife hide surveys and night treks, getting to experience firsthand an environment few ever witness and the great danger this amazing place is currently facing.

What ARE THE MAIN ISSUES?

  • Highly endangered plant and animal life
  • Deforestation and habitat erosion
  • Few local employment opportunities
  • Erosion of culture
