Bongkud Camp

Camp Bongkud has been built in the centre of a traditional Dusun community in Western Sabah. The camp benefits from the close proximity to the fabulous locals who have so much to offer. This part of Borneo has suffered from ruthless deforestation and mining in the past so our projects are aimed at producing as much benefit from the natural surroundings as possible.

Volunteers will be involved in permaculture projects, creating safe schooling environments and developing eco tourism facilities to provide an income from their surroundings. The camp is also the starting point for a 4-day trek into the jungle where we master the art of survival in a completely new environment.

LOCATION

100 km west from the coastal capital Kota Kinabalu, Camp Bongkud is only 20 minutes from Ranau, the largest town in the area and gateway to the mighty Mount Kinabalu and the accompanying national park. Camp Bongkud is also very near to the route of the infamous Prisoner of War Death marches of WWII.

ACCOMMODATION

Capacity: Sleeps up to 100

Camp Bongkud has tented accommodation that sleeps three people each. Each tent has ventilation and a built in fly screen to keep it cooler during the day and ensure an insect free sleep – so long as you remember to zip up!

Individual sleeping units consist of a high-density mattress, a pillow, sheets and a blanket.

Kitchen & Dining: Our local cooks from the community will keep you well fed with three meals a day using local produce. Meals are taken in a large communal area in the centre of the camp. All dietary requirements can be catered for and volunteer involvement is highly encouraged to produce a spicy cultural mix of foods. As in all camps we are encouraged to assist with all aspects of food preparation especially the cleaning up to become part of the team.

Toilets & Showers: There is a large toilet and shower block nearby, separated into male and female areas. The toilets are traditional style squat toilets.

Laundry: There is a washing area available for your laundry with plenty of line space for drying.

Social: The large dining area doubles as a social area at night, with the occasional dance and music performance from the community. There is also a raised seated area overlooking the river that flows next to the camp, perfect to relax in a hammock. The locals are thrilled with the opportunity to welcome you for a game of badminton or football and this is a unique opportunity to really immerse yourself into this fascinating and warm culture. The view of Mt Kinabalu early in the morning as the sun rises and lights it up is just stunning... if you wake up in time.

Power Supply: Mains electricity and is backed up by a generator, with British, 3 pin sockets throughout the camp to charge your electric items.

Phone signal: Good.

Other Facilities: There are number of small shops just near the entrance to the camp providing basic toiletries, snacks and drinks.

Security: 24 hour security.
