Jungle Camp, Batu Puteh

Our jungle Camp at Batu Puteh is a community run eco-tourism and jungle restoration project where we work hand in hand with the village to maintain and re-establish the local ecosystems of this highly important area. Set along the banks of the mighty Kinabatangan River, the Supu forest reserve is home to many fascinating and sadly extremely endangered species of flora and fauna, including the famous orangutans, curious proboscis monkeys, crocodiles and pygmy elephants.

You will stay both in the heart of the community and jungle gaining a unique insight into the fascinating culture and fragile environment that makes up Batu Puteh. Seeing at first hand the benefits you bring to the area.

LOCATION

On the banks of the Kinabatangan River, 60 km from the nearest large town of Lahad Datu on the east coast of Borneo and two hours south of Sandakan.

ACCOMMODATION

Jungle Camp: Getting back to nature and learning how to survive in the jungle in a hammock strung between two trees with a tarpaulin to protect you from the elements and a mosquito net to protect you from the insects. We will, of course, show you how to string this all together!

Homestay: Spending time in the house of one of the local families. Each family will accommodate 2 or 3 volunteers in one of their guest rooms (gap volunteers only).

Kitchen & Dining: In the jungle food will either be cooked in the camp itself over a fire or brought by boat from your homestay. As with all our camps, there will be unlimited water provided filtered to European standards. At the homestay meals will be eaten with the family in their communal room either squatting on the floor traditional style or at the kitchen table. There will be 3 meals a day of delicious local fare.

Toilets & Showers: Traditional squat toilets are the norm in the homestay houses. In the jungle a longdrop (hole in the ground) will add to the adventure of this camp!

Laundry: Washing services can be provided by the community at Batu Puteh. Alternatively, there is water available for hand washing of clothes.

Social: The jetty at Batu Puteh is often used as an impromptu social area, though when living with the community, invites to share the hospitality of the other homestays are common as well as the opportunity to test your skills playing various sports against eager locals. In the jungle guests generally gather around the campfire under a tarpaulin.

Power Supply: Mains electricity at the jetty (UK 3 pin). No access to power in the jungle. The homestays will be a mixture of generator and mains power and could be 3 or 2 pin, so an adaptor is handy just in case.

Phone signal: Good – even in the jungle!

Other Facilities: There is a shop in the community for basic toiletries, drinks and snacks.

Security: Batu Puteh has a security guard on duty 24 hours a day.
