Makongeni Camp

Makongeni was the first camp we built back in 2004 and is named after the community where it’s located. This charming rural village is only 4 km away from the Indian Ocean and is on the edge of a stunning mangrove forest fringed by palm trees. Makongeni is an unspoilt location off the beaten track giving you a real taste of authentic African life and a place to make lifelong friends and strong bonds with the local community.

LOCATION

55 km south of Mombasa, near the small town of Ukunda. It takes around 30 minutes to reach Diani beach by the main road.

ACCOMMODATION

Capacity: sleeps up to 60

Consists of four thatched cottages built in the traditional coastal style that each sleeps 4 people. Every banda has net window covers and the beds have individual mosquito nets – both designed to ensure an insect-free sleep!

Makongeni also has several large safari style tents that accommodate 4 people each and large dome tents (that sleep 3 people) are also frequently used. Individual sleeping units consist of a high-density mattress, a pillow, sheets, a blanket, a mosquito net and shelving to store your belongings.

Kitchen & Dining: Large fully equipped kitchen staffed by chefs who supply a daily menu of three healthy, well balanced and very tasty meals a day, all made from fresh local produce. We can cater for a variety of different dietary requirements so just let us know before you travel. All of our camps have a plentiful supply of clean drinking water. The camp also boasts 1 large thatched, open-sided dining area.

Toilets & Showers: Two separate toilet and shower blocks that have several flushing toilets and showers per block. Water for washing is pumped from a nearby borehole that has been purified ready for use.

Laundry: Small laundry area for volunteers to do their hand washing.

Social: 1 large social area, campfire, and outdoor relaxing areas

Power Supply: Mains electricity with generator back up. UK standard 3-pin plug sockets.

Phone signal: Generally good.

Other Facilities: The camp is located a minutes walk from the school and there is a football pitch right outside to allow you to have a kick-around with the school children after a hard day’s work.

Security: Camp Makongeni is surrounded by a wooden boma (perimeter fence) and has a security guard on duty 24 hrs a day.
