Camp Miti Mirefu (meaning ‘tall trees’ in Swahili) is a tented camp based in the heart of the Kilimanjaro Conservancy, one of the most beautiful and important wildlife areas in East Africa. The camp is based in the privately owned Ndarakwai Ranch on the slopes of west Kilimanjaro, which works to preserve a variety of habitats that are home to over 65 mammal species and 350 bird species. The ranch also acts as an important seasonal migratory route for elephants.
This unique bush camp is nestled in amongst towering fig trees and yellow-barked acacias and has views of both Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru. The area provides an idyllic haven for a myriad of wildlife such as elephants, zebras, giraffes, cheetahs, warthogs, lesser kudus and the occasional lion and buffalo.
Camp Miti Mirefu is located in Ndarakwai Ranch. The ranch is over 11,000 acres in size and located in Sihi District, West Kilimanjaro. It takes over an hour to reach the camp from Moshi.
ACCOMMODATION
Capacity: Sleeps 40
This amazing camp provides minimal creature comforts for volunteers BUT is a very special location indeed to truly get involved with real wildlife conservation work. The camp consists of several large dome tents that sleep 3 people each. Every tent has ventilation and a built in fly screen to keep it cooler during the day and ensure an insect-free sleep – providing you remember to keep the zip closed!
Individual sleeping units consist of a high-density mattress, a pillow, sheets and a blanket.
Kitchen & Dining: There is a small but well-equipped kitchen in camp, manned by our head chef who, with his team supplies a daily menu of fresh, local produce. Our camp kitchen crews generally live in or around each camp and use local cooking techniques to provide three healthy, well balanced and very tasty meals a day. All our teams can cater to different dietary requirements, just let us know beforehand. As in all our camps unlimited drinking water is supplied as standard: the water for the camp is pumped from the small stream nearby which originates from Kilimanjaro’s glacier and is purified through European standard filters and chemical purification.
Toilets & Showers: A long drop toilet and bucket shower all add to the adventure of this camp!
Laundry: Water available for hand washing of clothes.
Social: There is a large social and dining area.
Power Supply: Generator for 1-2 hours for you to re-charge electrical items so batteries are a must!
Phone signal: Poor.
Security: The camp is surrounded by an electric fence to deter wildlife from entering.
