Mwaluganje Camp

Camp Mwaluganje is a tented camp in one of the most stunning locations you will ever experience!  The camp is located inside Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary and its hilltop position affords you a privileged and exclusive preview into the lives of these amazing creatures.

A firm favourite with many of our volunteers (and staff), Camp Mwaluganje gives you the chance to get away from it all and reconnect with nature. The sanctuary is home to over 300 elephants, an impressive collection of birds, baboons, buffalos, warthogs and the occasional hyena and leopard if you are really lucky!

LOCATION

25 km south of Mombasa and 25 km inland from the Indian Ocean, the sanctuary is connected to Shimba Hills National Reserve via a natural wildlife corridor. It takes around 1 – 1.5 hours to reach the sanctuary from Diani Beach. The nearest town is Kwale, 30 minutes away by car (along a very rough road!)

ACCOMMODATION

Capacity: sleeps up to 60

Camp Mwaluganje consists of several large dome tents that sleep 3 people each. Every tent has ventilation and a built in fly screen to keep it cooler during the day and ensure an insect-free sleep – providing you remember to keep the zip closed! Individual sleeping units consist of a high-density mattress, a pillow, sheets and a blanket.

Kitchen & Dining: Field kitchen that is situated under the shade of a large baobab tree and staffed by a local cook who supplies a daily menu of three healthy, well balanced and very tasty meals a day, all made from local produce. We can cater for a variety of different dietary requirements so just let us know before you travel. All of our camps have a plentiful supply of clean drinking water. There is a large thatched, open-sided dining and social area in the centre of camp.

Toilets & Showers: There are two flushing toilets in camp and two mobile cold-water showers. Water is a scarce commodity here and so the use of water for showering and doing laundry may be restricted.

Laundry: Limited water available for hand washing clothes.

Social: Large social and dining area, campfire, stunning panoramic views of the sanctuary.

Power Supply: Generator for 1-2 hours in the evening – so make sure you take plenty of batteries! UK standard 3-pin plug sockets.

Phone signal: Poor.

Other Facilities: None.

Security: The camp is unfenced but the camp boundary is clearly visible. There is a security guard on duty.
