Tinangol Camp

Established in 2008, Camp Tinangol is based around a beautifully crafted traditional long house, raised off the ground on stilts and divided into a communal area along one side and a row of private living quarters lined down the other. The camp is situated just beyond the rural Rungus community of the same name where you will become immersed in local culture and tradition.

The Kampung (village) of Tinangol is home to around 800 people and consists of three longhouses each housing 25 families (roughly 200 people) as well as a scattering of separate stilt houses.

LOCATION

Approximately 150km north of the state capital Kota Kinabalu, in the northwestern corner of Sabah. The journey from Kota Kinabalu takes around 3 hours by bus.

ACCOMMODATION

Capacity: Sleeps up to 20

The longhouse is divided into 5 sleeping rooms. Each single-sex room sleeps three to four people, using mattresses on a raised platform. Volunteers should bring their own mosquito net to ensure an insect free sleep, though other bedding is provided.

Kitchen & Dining: A well equipped kitchen staffed by local cooks who supply a daily menu of three delicious well balanced meals, all made from fresh local produce.  Food will be a mixture of Malaysian and western so it should cater for all tastes and preferences! We can cater for a variety of different dietary requirements so just let us know before you travel.

Toilets & Showers: Toilet and shower block located near the long house. Washrooms are separated into male and female. Toilets are traditional Asian style squat toilets.

Laundry: Small laundry area for volunteers to do their hand washing.

Social: The longhouse includes a large communal area along one side to gather plus a smaller seated entrance porch. There is also an external covered area next to the volleyball court.

Power Supply: The camp benefits from 24-hour mains electricity and UK standard 3-pin plug sockets.

Phone signal: Fair but intermittent.

Other Facilities: A small community run shop selling basic toiletries snacks and drinks was recently added to the camp, with all profits going straight back to community endeavours.

Security: Camp Tinangol has 24-hour security.
