Tinangol

OVERVIEW
Camp Tinangol is part of a community run ecotourism initiative that was set up in 2008 alongside the Pacos Trust and Camp Borneo. Based around a traditionally built wood and bamboo Long House, this was our first Camp in Borneo and one that has community interaction at its heart.
To date, our volunteers have helped to construct a experimental biogas collector, refurbish a longhouse to be used as a Handicraft centre, re-paint the local church and school and have begun construction on a large multi-purpose Kindergarten and community centre. Other activities include teaching English at the local school, learning local handicraft techniques and joining in with local music and dance recitals helping a new generation embrace the fascinating culture and traditions as they are passed down.
What ARE THE MAIN ISSUES?
- Poverty
- No education for under 7’s
- Few local employment opportunities
- Land rights and Oil Palm Plantation encroachment
- Erosion of culture
