Overview
Camp Mukurumuji (Mu-ku-roo-moo-ji) is our second community and wildlife project camp.
The Camp is a permanent "luxury" tented camp and acts as our base camp for "Life" guests.
The camp is situated at the foothills of Shimba Hills National Reserve and is named after the Mukurumuji River (Where People meet) which flows through the property. The camp is 35 Km from Diani beach and Camp Kenya 's head office.
Partnership programs with the local community as well as the Sable Valley Wildlife Sanctuary compliment the rather more luxurious "Old Style" safari feel of the camp. The camp is totally surrounded by an ancient, impressive and unfortunately now very rare equatorial rain forest.
18 to 22 people depending on seasonality

Luxury permanent tented accommodation. Six thatched cottages with classic safari style tents and Swahili furniture, as well as a very special suite with a remarkable open shower overlooking the Shimba Hills Reserve provide ample and comfortable accommodation. The traditionally thatched, mud brick dining room and kitchen also reflect a style of a bygone "Out of Africa" tradition.
As with all Camp Kenya camps the food is excellent and varied. All tastes are catered for (OK we save the lobster for 25th wedding anniversaries) including vegetarian and vegan. Drinking water is plentiful, free of charge and included in all of the varied packages on offer.
Normal cell (mobile) telephones do work very well at the end of the camp boundary up the hill underneath the Baobab Tree to the right of the bushes.no joke !
The Camp is also equipped with a satellite telephone for essential and emergency use.
Mukurumuji is a unique environment very similar to Mwlunganji, with the exception that the geography is not savannah but lush tropical rain forest.
Do to the "relief" rainfall created by the rain forest, cultivation is prevalent, with over 90% of the local population surviving on subsistence farming. Where crops flourish so does wildlife, wild pigs, elephant & buffalo all pose a serious risk and constant threat to the local community.
Because Mukurumuji Camp is fenced "into" Shimba Hills National Reserve, it is effectively the last boundary for the wildlife and community. This presents challenging scenarios for human/wildlife issue. As with other communities the most important issue is maintaining an understanding and fair balance of wildlife conservation and human/community protection.
This is an opportunity to learn about the local people and understand how they live alongside the wildlife.
Special Safari prepared mini buses as well as 4x4 vehicles support the camp infrastructure and guest requirements.
It is important that you spend time at the school in order to see through your project objectives and build a relationship with the children and staff. The welcome the school offers you can be a humbling experience and your personal contribution will provide significant input into the sustainable program for the ongoing development of the children's education and welfare.
As Camp Kenya has committed to improving the local school infrastructure, you will be involved with project initiatives that include:
- Desk making
- Refurbishment of classrooms
- Landscaping and tree planting
- Teaching
- Maintenance of Game Park fence line
- Replanting of indigenous hardwood trees
- Construction and inception of Tsetse fly control centre
During your stay, you will have the opportunity to interact and work alongside the local community. Identified long term village/community projects include:
- Construction of dispensary for local community
- Providing water supply for village
