Volunteer holidays Africa - Community Life 1 week

This tour has been designed for the responsible traveller that is keen to take on a rewarding challenge and support our ongoing community programmes, but who maybe short of time or keen to tag onto another experience. Makongeni Camp only sleeps 22 people so you can be assured of a very personal experience.

Life 1 allows you to reach out to less privileged communities and really make a difference. You will work alongside local Kenyans on school projects and help improve the lives of the local people with an emphasis on the local school children. The time spent may seem short, but you will be making a valuable contribution to sustainable development in a beautiful setting

You will spend three days working on classrooms renovations and other amenities which will provide you with opportunities to learn new skills such as bricklaying, plastering and painting as well as experiencing the very important cultural interaction aspect with the local people. The Indian Ocean is only 45 minutes away and we have included an optional trip to the beach also.

Highlights

  • Community development volunteer programme
  • Interact with a friendly Kenyan community as a guest not a tourist
  • Enjoy the beauty of the Kenyan coastline and stunning Indian Ocean

Itinerary (6 nights/ 7 days)

Day 1, Mombasa – Makongeni Camp – You arrive at Mombasa airport where you are met by a Camp Kenya guide. You will then take a drive through Mombasa town to the South Coast, through rural Kenyan villages and a scenic drive to Makongeni Tented Camp, ready for lunch. After settling in to your accommodation, you will be given a full briefing and orientation before dinner. (LD)

Day 2, Makongeni Camp – After an enjoyable breakfast, you will be guided through a typical rural African village walk up to the Makongeni Mangrove Swamps where you can meet members of the Makongeni Baraka Conservation Group which is led by women from the area. The group is constructing several ecofriendly fishponds, resorting mangrove forests and developing ecotourism activities. From there you will pass through small villages to visit the local school where your community work is based (BLD)

Days 3 &4, Volunteer Programme – Participate in the on going community projects in the school with other volunteers and the local community. (BLD)

Day 5, Ocean day – An opportunity to relax by the beach, do some shopping, or sign up for one of the many optional adventure activities available at Aqualand Adventure Centre such as Scuba Diving, snorkelling, a dolphin spotting trip and kite surfing. (BD

Day 6, Volunteer Programme – Your last day with the community and a time to put the final touches to the projects you have been involved with and to bid “Kwaheri” (Farewell) to those you have been working with. You will be surprised how hard it is to say goodbye after only a few days. (BLD)

Day 7, Departure - Transfer to Mombasa and depart. (B)

Please be aware that the exact nature of the work you will be involved in will depend on the current needs and priorities of the school and village. As volunteers it is important to remain flexible and keep in mind that sometimes priorities and/or emergencies may arise which may result in your duties changing at short notice. We also reserve the right to change the order of your itinerary, not the components, to suit client numbers and seasonality.

Makongeni

Makongeni is a small rural community situated 50 km south of Mombasa in the district of Msambweni. Makongeni village consists mainly of residential dwellings with one or two kiosks that sell basic grocery supplies. The only school in the village, Makongeni primary school, was originally designed to accommodate around 150 pupils. However, since the recent advent of free primary school education in Kenya, this small school now facilitates over 600 pupils! Read More...
