Lee’s Gap Year – 7 years on

Camps International spotted a Tweet last week from a Gap Year volunteer who traveled with us 7 years ago.

“Thanks to @CampsInt for my time in Kenya. May have been almost seven years ago now but the memories are always with me. Humbling experience”

It made us feel quite satisfied that the hard work of years gone by had paid off so we contacted Lee and asked him a few questions:

CI: How old are you now, where did you go and when?

Lee: 26 years old I went to Camp Kenya for 3 months in June 2004

CI: How did you raise the money to go on your Gap Year?

Lee: I worked full time at nights (a killer) and used a saving bond left for me.

CI: What was your best Gap Year achievement and what are you most proud of ?

Lee: Everything! I’m proud of all the work we did with the school, doing our small bit to improve the quality of life for the children. A personal achievement would be climbing Mount Kenya.

CI: How has the experience helped you since you did your expedition? Such as with your university application to impress the tutor/be more independent and give you a step up when applying for work.

Lee: My time in Kenya gave me a lot of experiences to draw on when applying for jobs. It gave me the confidence to work with groups of people and build friendships. I think its a great way for people to experience something new, be humbled by the differences in the world, to realise there is more than just School, Uni, Work. There is more beyond Facebook, BB pins, The Only Way Is Essex. I think its an inspiring thing, to be part of an entirely different culture, to push yourself to climb a mountain, or complete any other expedition.

CI: Why volunteer on your Gap Year?

Lee: A year out in Oz is old hat. Camp Kenya was something daring and new.

CI: Any final comments?

Lee: Can you find a cure to the post traveling blues?

Party time

CI: Simple just choose a new country like Borneo and book another three months. Only joking Lee but seriously we have just launched the new Life site with Family volunteering expeditions and not for profit trip to raise funds for our foundation.
