Camp Tanzania

It’s amazing just how fast the summer went. Camp Tanzania hosted 6 Teams with a total of 153 hard working and hard playing students this year. This year we covered a lot of ground ranging from safaris to lots of different projects and just lazing around on the sandy beaches of Zanzibar and Kipepeo. And of course no trip to Tanzania would be complete without spending some time with the famous Maasai people:

Just to give you an overview of what went down in Tanzania, teams were split into their respective project sites. At Mbokumu Primary School, teams worked on constructing the verandah and putting up the roof of  a huge dining hall.

Still in Moshi/Mbokomu, two other Teams focused on the Anglican Children center where they were plastering two of the centre classroom blocks. 70% of the work was achieved on this task. The teams also also began the construction of a workshop for the center and managed to get to window level.

Msaranga project was also on the cards here in Moshi. The Teams constructed a classroom and plastered one in the process.

Ndarakwai or Rafiki camp as we all call it is where wildlife conservation related projects were done.  Teams were involved in making Elephant Dung paper (EDP) or Pooh paper as is popularly known.  We also had great opportunities to go on Nature walks and help with the ongoing wildlife population census as well as helping with general maintenance of the ranch. Teams also were part of a very exciting new school project which involved digging a big fish pond to start fish farming!

Meru Camp was more about having a feel of what it is like to live with one of Tanzania’s many tribes: the Meru. Teams interacted with the commmunity and played sports with the local kids. The volunteers were also involved in deworming the locals’ cattle, sheep and Goats. Students were taken on cultural tours and they were also taught how to harvest and roast coffee. They helped the villages tend to their animals, feeding the cows and helping the local mamas with their daily chores. While here, Teams worked with a local School, Nkoanekoli Primary where they constructed a water tank for the School and rehabilitated the netball court.

It must sounds as if it’s all work and no play as I have only been ranting about what and how much the Teams have achieved in terms of projects.  Work hard and play hard. That is what we are all about. We organized fancy dress parties in camp. Have a look below. Need I say more? :)

We have uploaded plenty photos from this summer’s Tanzania expedition so have a look by clicking HERE and if you have any photos you would like to share with teh Camps International family, please joing our CI flikr group pool by clicking HERE.

A big thanks to everyone who made Summer 2009 a massive success. So much achieved and lots of fun too!
