When it comes to travel, preparation is key. Here at Camps, we take care of all the behind the scenes preparation for you, so you don’t have to worry. Even so, there are lots of other things that you can do to get you in the expedition mindset and ready to go.

Here are just a few of things you can get started on:

Learn the language

Although the staff in our Camps are English speaking, it never hurts to get a handle on the basics of the language. Not only is it a skill that you can boast about on your job applications, but it can also really help you communicate with the local community whilst you’re on expedition. What better way to introduce yourself to someone than in their own local language!

How to do it: Check out our social media pages where we post some basic phrases to learn or do a quick internet search and use online recordings to practise the correct pronunciation.

Get started on your kit list

Now is a good time to shop around for some of the items on your kit list. Check out outdoor adventure retailers for any sales and make sure to compare prices across several stores. You could even take the time to find second-hand kit. There are plenty of people with great quality, barely used kit for sale online which you can snap up for half the price of the same item brand new. The more prepared you are with your kit list, the cheaper it will work out!

How to do it: Make sure you check out your Traveller Gateway to see your full kit list.

"image-3-6"

Research the culture

Each of our expedition locations has its own unique culture. To help you get prepared, research the local culture for your expedition location so that you’re clued up on what to expect at each camp. For example, if you’re heading to the temples in Cambodia, you’ll need to make sure that you are wearing appropriate clothing. A little research beforehand can save you from wearing any offensive attire!

How to do it: Stay up to date with Camps’ blogs and socials to read more about our locations and communities. Reading books and watching films set in your destination country is also a great way to immerse yourself in the culture.

Keep a diary

A good way to keep track of your journey is to keep a diary. Write down your thoughts, feelings and expectations prior to your expedition. You can then look back on it once you’ve returned from your trip and compare your thoughts to see how much you’ve grown, and how your opinions have changed. Our expeditions are a positive life-changing experience and it will be sure to change your approach to life once you’ve returned.

How to do it: A simple notebook and a pen is all you need! If your stuck for words, try starting with the phrase ‘When I think about going on expedition I feel…’ or ‘I think life on expedition will be…’.

Prepare to travel responsibly

At Camps, we always promote ethical travel. Our wealth of experience means that we don’t partake in ‘voluntourism’ and we do everything in our power to ensure that our volunteers travel responsibly. From asking permission to take someone’s photo to only purchasing souvenirs from local crafters rather than chain stores, there are loads of ways that you can travel in a responsible manner.

How to do it: Check out this useful guide from Radi-Aid for guidance on how to use social media ethically around your expedition. Educate yourself about Camps’ projects using our website and Project Reports so you have a deeper understanding of the local context before you even step on the plane.

Although travel may seem a long way off at the moment, the key to having a successful expedition is to prepare as much as possible whilst you can! This way you’ll know what to expect, reducing last-minute nerves and leaving you free to enjoy your expedition to the max.
