Day 1 Arrival and Transfer to Camp Muhaka After your arrival in Kenya, you’ll transfer to Muhaka Camp, situated in the heart of a rural village. After settling into your accommodation, you will be given a full briefing of the camp and the village. We have been working with this community for over 7 years, so you will be welcomed warmly by the people who will be your family during your stay. Your orientation will include a walk in the village, meeting with different kind of families followed by a briefing where you will learn more about the current situation and challenges faced by the community. Spend the rest of the day interacting with the local children and learning more about their culture before tucking into a tasty dinner.
Day 2 Marine Conservation Day Today you will transfer down to Diani Beach for your Marine Conservation Programme. During your time here, you’ll be looking at marine wildlife, habitats and conservation, and will get the opportunity to gain experience in collecting data and learning about various research projects and methods. Throughout you will learn about the importance of the oceans, waste management, sustainability and how the programme helps to conserve the environment in daily lives as well as find out about all the various conservation efforts around Africa.
Day 3 Transfer to Camp Tsavo After saying farewell to the Muhaka team, you’ll take the 3-4 hour journey to Tsavo where you will spend your time at the Safari Lodge. On entering the Park gate you will begin your first safari enroute to the camp. After lunch at the lodge you will relax for a bit before heading off to another safari and back to the Lodge for dinner.
Day 4 Cultural Immersion This morning, you’ll set out on a hike through the Marungu Hills, visiting ancient caves and taking in spectacular views over Rukinga Ranch. Along the way, local guides will share traditional bush survival skills, including how to build shelters, make fire and use a bow and arrow. In the afternoon, visit an inspiring women’s group we’ve partnered with for many years to learn about community-led income-generation project. Try your hand at beadwork and elephant-dung paper making, and support the community with livestock care such as de-worming goats.
Day 5 Tsavo East Safari Day After an early breakfast at camp, you will embark on your Safari in Tsavo East National Park, home to a variety of wildlife which includes lions, elephants, birds, zebra and giraffe to name a few. You will stop for a picnic lunch before carrying on with spotting the incredible wildlife before heading back to the lodge for dinner.
Day 6 Departure Say your goodbyes to the Camp Kenya team as you transfer to the airport ready for your flight home.

Muhaka village remains one of the poorest communities in Kenya. You will help to support community development projects such as traditional house building and school improvements. You may also work on our reforestation projects within the sacred Kaya forest, an important habitat home to many species of monkeys.

You’ll get to stay in a number of camps during your expedition, which could include those featured below.

Camp Tsavo

Camp Tsavo gives you the chance to experience life in the real African wilderness. Surrounded by the picturesque Marungu Hills that lie close to the world famous Tsavo National Parks, this area is famed for its wildlife and providing a safe haven for elephants, lions, cheetahs and other amazing animals.

The camp itself is situated in the heart of the charming local village, where you will experience authentic African culture and hospitality so welcoming that you won’t want to leave.

  • Location: 3-4 hours drive from Mombasa Airport, 6-7 hours drive from Nairobi Airport
  • Accommodation style: Traditional bandas
  • Bed type: bunk beds with comfy mattresses and bedding.
  • Toilets: Long Drop Eco Toilets
  • Showers: Modern showers and sinks
  • Power: Mains electricity backed up by generator (between 18:30 – 22:00). British 3 pin power sockets
  • Social area: Amazing views from camp. Camp fire, football pitch, small bar and gift shop, town nearby
  • Signature dish: Our chefs delicious chapatis will be one of the highlights of your whole trip – they are that good!

Camp Muhaka

Camp Muhaka will quickly become your home away from home. With stylish traditional buildings and a great social scene, there’s plenty to keep you busy. Being in the heart of the village also has its perks; all your project sites are only a short walk away and you can walk with the children to and from school so you’ll be a local in no time!

  • Location: 1.5-2 hours drive from Mombasa Airport
  • Accommodation style: Traditional bandas and tents
  • Bed Type: Comfy mattresses and bedding.
  • Toilets: Modern toilets
  • Showers: Modern showers and sinks
  • Power: Mains electricity backed up by generator (between 18:00 – 22:00). British 3 pin power sockets
  • Social area: Based right in the heart of the community, in walking distance to project sites and a short drive to the beach. Chill out zone with camp fire and pool table
  • Signature dish: Ugali & Rice

As a student who visited camps international, Kenya camp; I really enjoyed my stay at the camp. I got closer to many new people and I made friends with other groups. I experienced very amazing sunsets and views. Camps international changed me in someway, as I am much more adventurous after this trip. And I learnt to be thankful and appreciate what I have!
