Uganda Impact Expedition: Community and Chimps

From vast mountain ranges to incredible waterfalls, Uganda really is the ‘Pearl of Africa’. You’ll have the privilege of working alongside the local community on a number of projects before before heading to Ngamba Island to spend time with some loveable chimpanzees.

During this life-changing expedition you will get to experience one of the most beautiful countries in Africa and gain a new perspective on life, living and working alongside local communities. Take in the spectacular wildlife and help play an active part in supporting community development initiatives to help alleviate poverty. Spend time at Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, learning about their commitment and involvment with field conservation and community education, learning how they work closely with the Ugandan government and wildlife authorities.

Day Activities More details
Day 1 Arrive in Uganda On arrival in Uganda, you will be met by a member of our awesome Camp Uganda crew who will transfer you to Jinja Base Camp (3-4 hours). Here you will have some time to settle in before an arrival briefing and camp orientation from our Camp Manager. In the evening, you’ll be treated to a traditional home-cooked dinner and have some time to relax.
Day 2 Kirindi Primary Community Project After a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast, you will head for the project site – Kirindi Primary School. Upon arrival you will have a project orientation and an opportunity to meet the community.
Day 3 – 5 Continue with project work Due to a lack of resources within the community, local children do not have access to proper classrooms, and they are taught in temporary, unsafe structures. Over the next few days you will continue to work along side the local community on several projects that could include low level construction, painting, plastering and brick laying. However, it isn’t all just about getting your hands dirty. Your evenings will be spent playing games with the local children, learning about the traditional Ugandan way of life or skills such as making handicrafts as well as practising your Swahili.
Day 6 Travel to Entebbe Following your final breakfast at camp you will begin your journey to Entebbe. There will be time for a little souvenir shopping along the way in Jinja town and you will stop for a packed lunch at the source of the Nile. Upon arrival at your Entebbe hotel accommodation there will be time to settle in before a tasty evening dinner and a wildlife quiz.
Day 7 Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Visit This morning you will take a boat to Ngamba Island where you will visit a Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Surrounded by the peaceful waters of Lake Victoria, Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is home to orphaned chimpanzees rescued from across East Africa. Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust (Chimpanzee Trust), an NGO, is responsible for all aspects of the sanctuary. Deeply committed to and involved in both field conservation and community education, they work closely with the Ugandan government and wildlife authorities. You will spend the day at the sanctuary, learning about the work they are doing to protect Chimpanzees. There will also be an opportunity to see the Chimp’s being fed in the afternoon. At the end of the day you will head back to Entebbe by boat for a farewell dinner and a chance to reflect on your Uganda experience.
Day 8 Kwaheri from Uganda It’s time to say your final farewells (or Kwaheri in Swahili) to the Camp Uganda crew before heading back to the airport in time for your flight home.

You’ll work on a range of projects throughout your expedition, each aligned to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and designed to make a significant and lasting impact on the region’s most critical issues.

Uganda – School improvements

You’ll be based on one of the poorest areas of Uganda, which is badly affected by seasonal rainfall. The infrastructure at the local school is in a severe state of disrepair and children are often taught outside due to a lack of facilities. You’ll help to construct or refurbish permanent classrooms so that local children have access to a safe and suitable place to learn.
