Breaking Barriers, Shaping Futures: Empowering Female Students Through Experiential Travel

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, it’s fitting to reflect on the progress we’ve made in empowering women, and acknowledge the work that still lies ahead. One area where Camps International has seen significant strides is in the increasing participation of female students in experiential travel and educational expeditions; as of 2023, female attendance at Camps International trips matches that of the males, with a 50-50 gender split in attendance from the UAE school students.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing first-hand the transformational impact that travel can have on young minds. From building confidence to fostering empathy and resilience, the benefits of these experiences are undeniable. However, it’s particularly inspiring to see more and more young women seizing these opportunities and embracing the spirit of adventure and exploration.

Historically, women have faced barriers and societal expectations that have limited their access to certain opportunities, including travel and education. But as we continue to break down these barriers and challenge outdated stereotypes, we’re seeing a cultural shift where young women are encouraged and uplifted to pursue their passions and broaden their horizons.

Notably, the Women’s Empowerment Index – which measures women’s power and freedoms to make choices and seize life opportunities across five dimensions: health, education, inclusion, decision-making, and violence against women – reported that, globally, women are empowered to achieve on average only 60 percent of their full potential. We are steadfast in our mission to provide ethical, educational and inclusive opportunities to those in our orbit, both those attending expeditions, and those in the communities that we reach.

Participation in educational expeditions not only equips female students with valuable life skills and global perspectives but also empowers them to defy expectations and chart their own paths. It sends a powerful message that their voices matter, their dreams are valid, and their potential is limitless. By providing them with opportunities to explore new cultures, connect with diverse communities, and challenge themselves in unfamiliar environments, we’re nurturing the next generation of leaders, changemakers, and trailblazers.

However, our work is far from over. We must continue to advocate for equal access to educational opportunities, dismantle systemic barriers, and create inclusive spaces where all young people, regardless of gender, can thrive and succeed.

So this International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate the progress we’ve made and recommit ourselves to the ongoing pursuit of gender equality and female empowerment. Let’s empower every young woman to dream big, reach for the stars, and forge their own path to success.

Happy International Women’s Day!
