Day Activities More details
Day 1 Arrival Day Upon arrival at Mombasa airport, you’ll be met by a member of our Camps crew before taking the 3-4 hour journey to our flagship camp – Camp Tsavo. Here you will be warmly welcomed by our Camp Manager who will run a camp safety briefing and orientation of the camp. Our project leader will give you an overview of what your time here will involve and you’ll finish your day practising some Swahili phrases around the campfire.
Day 2 Project Orientation After a good night’s sleep and a tasty breakfast, our project leaders will take you to visit our various project sites. You will gain an understanding of the issues you will be helping to tackle through your project work and we’ll establish your goals and objectives.
Day 3 Community School Project Today you will commence your project work at the local school where you will be helping to improve school infrastructure and facilities. Your work could include building classrooms or toilets, making desks or erecting gabions to counteract soil erosion which threatens the school buildings. You’ll be interacting with local people and school children every day, giving you a chance to practice your newly learnt Swahili phrases, as well as supporting teachers to improve English speaking in the local schools.
Day 4 Goat Deworming and Tumaini Women’s Group You will start the day with the most fun project work. Helping farmers deworm their goats means the goats are in good health and can be sold at markets. The money obtained from selling goats helps community members buy food, clothes and pay school fees for their Children. After lunch You’ll also have the opportunity to participate in an educational environmental workshop, making paper out of elephant dung to bring a source of income to the community. In the afternoon you’ll spend time with the Tumaini Women’s group – an inspiring group that empowers local women who suffer from gender-based poverty, violence, illiteracy and health issues, by helping them with alternative income-generation activities. You’ll be learning to make bead crafts for the group which can be sold to generate income.
Day 5 Tsavo East National Park After an early breakfast at camp, you will embark on your Big Game Safari in Tsavo East National Park – home to a variety of wildlife which includes lions, elephants, birds, zebra and giraffe to name a few. This is sure to be a day to remember!
Day 6 Transfer to Muhaka Transfer to Muhaka Camp, situated in the heart of a rural village from Moi Airport (2-3 hrs). After settling into your accommodation, you will be given a full briefing of the camp and the village. We have been working with this community for over 7 years so you will be welcomed warmly by the people who will be your family during your stay. Your orientation will include a walk in the village, meeting with different kind of families followed by a briefing where you will learn more about the current situation and challenges faced by the community. Spend the rest of the day interacting with the local children and learning more about their culture before tucking into a tasty dinner.
Day 7 School Project Work After breakfast you will visit the local school and take part in some hands-on project work. Projects will vary and may include Classroom refurbishment, painting, floor refurbishment, fixing the ceiling and repair of the veranda. You will have time to relax in the evening over dinner and reflect on your days’ work.
Day 8 Housing Project In the Muhaka region, many vulnerable families and elders live in homes that have fallen into disrepair, with some houses now uninhabitable and urgently needing support. You’ll spend the day working alongside our skilled local craftsmen, helping to restore and improve these essential facilities.
Day 9 Marine Conservation Today you will transfer down to the Spectacular Diani Beach (30 min) for your Marine Conservation Programme. During your time you will be looking at marine wildlife, habitats and conservation and you will get the opportunity to gain experience in collecting data and learning about various research projects and methods. Throughout you will learn about the importance of the oceans, waste management, sustainability and how the programme helps to conserve the environment in daily lives as well as find out about all the various conservation efforts around Africa.
Day 10 Departure Today you will be transferred back to the airport where you will say your final goodbyes to the team before boarding your flight home.

How you’ll make a difference

You’ll work on a range of projects throughout your expedition, each aligned to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and designed to make a significant and lasting impact on the region’s most critical issues.

School improvement

Kenya – School improvements and conservation work

Many local schools are in very dilapidated buildings which suffer from erosion and seasonal flooding. You’ll help to build or renovate school buildings so that local children have a clean and safe academic environment. You’ll also get involved in initiatives to promote a peaceful co-existence between the community and the local wildlife, such as improving natural waterholes and planting indigenous trees for habitat and food sources.
