Get a taste of the challenges facing Cambodians, and the subsequent impact on your students, on a rewarding teacher taster trip. Find out what it will be like to live and work in a rural Cambodian community and make a measurable impact through community development initiatives.

Cambodia is a country of extremes, with severe poverty flanked by 5* hotels and exclusive tourism, ancient temples and modern evolving city, peace loving people but with a terrible recent history of the Khmer Rouge. You will get the chance to visit the awe-inspiring Angkor Wat temple, wander the night markets of Siem Reap, understand the terrible events of the Khmer Rouge regime at the Killing Fields, soak up the sunset across padi-fields and meet the incredible people of Cambodia.

Once you experience it you will never look back. You will go away with a sound idea of what your students, can learn, be a part of and how they can make an impact.

Camp Beng Mealea

This delightful rural camp is set on the outskirts of Teuk Lich village within Beng Mealea commune. Accommodation is in the form of traditional Khmer stilted longhouses positioned in the shade of large banana and papaya trees. The camp is surrounded by paddy fields and pretty amazing views on all sides. On a clear day you can see the impressive ridge line of the Kulen National Park from your longhouse. And if that isn’t enough, there is the ancient ruined temple of Beng Mealea to explore only a short walk away, as well as a large ornate pagoda where the Buddhist monks live.

  • Location: 75 km (1.5 hours drive) from Siem Reap International Airport
  • Accommodation style: Traditional longhouses
  • Bed type: Comfy mattresses & bedding including mosquito net
  • Toilets: Composting toilets
  • Showers: Cold water showers & wash basins
  • Power: Mains electricity. 2 flat pin style power sockets
  • Social area: Chill out zone, camp fire, hammocks
  • Signature dish: Khmer curry – Mild coconut curry usually served as a meat or vegetable curry.

Camp Beng Pae

Beng Pae is located in the village of Ta Lek and within the Beng Pae Wildlife Reserve. Surrounded by impressive pine trees, the camp is designed and built in the local hill tribe house style.

  • Location: 220 km (3 hours drive) from Siem Reap International Airport
  • Accommodation style: Traditional longhouses
  • Bed type: Comfy mattresses & bedding including mosquito net.
  • Toilets: Flushing toilets,
  • Showers: Showers & wash basins
  • Power: Mains electricity. 2 flat pin style power sockets
  • Social area: Chill out zone, camp fire, hammocks
  • Signature dish: Beef Loklak, Stir fried, grilled aubergine.

This itinerary will give you an insight into what you can expect on your expedition. It is dependent on time of travel and some elements may be subject to change.

Day Activities More details
Sunday 10th Travel Day Catch your flight from Melbourne.
Monday 11th Arrive Phnom Penh Freshen up at the hotel and go on a tour of the city, markets, S21 and Killing Fields.  Enjoy dinner on the banks of the river.
Tuesday 12th Transfer to Camp Beng Pae Transfer 4hrs north to Camp Beng Pae and enjoy lunch upon arrival.  You will be taken on an orientation tour of village including seeing project work.  You will be spend a few hours working on project such as well building.  Receive water blessing from monks and relax in Camp for the evening.
Wednesday 13th Transfer to Camp Beng Mealea Transfer 3 hrs to Camp Beng Mealea.  Enjoy lunch upon arrival and a tour of the village and projects at the local school. Conduct some project work at  the English teaching classroom and help out with basic English lessons with local children. 
Thursday 14th Kulen National Park Transfer to Kulen National Park (approx. 1 hour) and trek to Kulen waterfalls (approx. 2 hrs). View the waterfall and other sights such as the reclining buddha in the local area. Transfer to Siem Reap hotel to check in. Relax at the hotel before venturing into town for dinner and walk around the night markets.
Friday 15th Angkor Wat Visit Angkor Wat and other associated temples with a guide and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. Return to hotel mid afternoon to relax and explore Siem Reap town further. Enjoy an evening meal followed by Phare Circus show.  Afterwards you will have the chance to explore more markets and Pub Street.
Saturday 16th Transfer to Phnom Penh Transfer by bus to Phnom Penh for final shopping and a night in the city.
Sunday 17th Departure Catch your flight from Phnom Penh back to Melbourne.
